Hollywood Glamour: Jewelry from the Silver Screen

Influencing trends in jewelry and publicizing the names of jewelers-to-the-stars like Paul Flato and Trabert & Hoeffer—Mauboussin, their choices had a lasting impact on American tastes in jewelry. Combining glamorous images and film clips, Dr. Emily Stoehrer will share tales about the jewelry worn on- and off-screen by America’s most famous movie stars.

About the Speaker

Dr. Emily Stoehrer is the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She co-curated Hollywood Glamour: Fashion & Jewelry from the Silver Screen (2014-2015) and further investigated the effect of on-screen jewelry in her doctoral dissertation Hollywood Tastemaker: Jewelling the Red Carpet, The Neil Lane Collection, 1995-2010 (2016).

Learn about how they captivated diverse cultures through history and continue to enthrall contemporary audiences. Gain insights of what makes a stone great, revel in the glamour of jewelry design in the 1930s and 40s, and immerse yourself in the Merriweather Post collection, arguably one of the most impressive jewelry ensembles of the 20th century.

Spectacular Gems and Jewelry from the Merriweather Post Collection was conceived of and organized by Hillwood’s chief curator and director of collections, Liana Paredes, who also wrote the publication of the same name. Liana passed away at her home on March 16, 2017.
