About this object

The Buddhist Bodhisattva of Mercy, Guanyin, is carved in green jade with touches of grey. The elaborate and beautifully carved statuette shows the maiden wearing a short sleeved blouse over a narrow skirt. She has a belt around her waist and a cape over her shoulders. She wears many scarves, necklaces and decorations. She holds a scarf in her lowered right hand and holds aloft in her left hand a tall, thin ambrosia vase. She has her hair dressed in a topknot. Her outfit is Indian and she has a third eye in the center of her forehead. The square jade base is carved with a floral decoration in the central front and back. The wooden base in four levels is carved with leaf motifs.
