A folded piece of stationery written on three sides and engraved on the front with 31 Lowndes Square SW. Letter from James Russell Lowell was written to George W. Smalley October 11, 1884 about some mistake that Lowell made. 11th Oct 1884 Dear Smalley, Thanks for your kind note, You would know how beset I was with ? and will read between the lines, perhaps I am rather too fond of unifying? thimgs by innuendo instead of the pity? lawyer style that is in fashion here. However, I am glad I dont seem to have made a help of it as I feared I might. But what a splash I have made with how small a stone! I cant help laughing for it never enters my head that I am speaking urbi et orbi. I was much obliged by the tribunes. I read every word about the Gladstonbe progress and can give you no higher praise than to say that during a part of the reading I thought I was there. I was coming out tomorrow to ask after you and ? hope to find you better. I am looking forward eagerly to Mrs. Smalleys return for I have missed her even more than I feared I should. I had a really delightful letter from Eric day before yesterday. It was excellent narrative simple and natural Faithfully yours JA Lowell
