Letters from Cambridge, Massachusetts dated February 24, 1842. Longfellow had been staying at Portland, New Hampshire with his sister and found on his return to Castle Crargie a letter from Sam Ward which he answers. Charles Sumner attaches his letter to Sam Ward at the bottom. Court St Thursday noon- Dear Sam, Longfellow allows me this space. He has just some in from Down East, and read your letter of Feb 16th on the wine, which came with mine. I am free and confess that my ? and our have passsed over, and if the thing were the same again, ? must order the 100 better. Nevertheless, they are mine, but you must let me pay you in the course of a month in six weeks. I will tell you when and draw in rue. That coming clients have left me in the lurch for the present. I will see Chas. Avery to night and will report to him what you say. Felton arrived this morning, travel worn, and "stained with the variation french soil" between here and N. York. He was weary aand have with an intense head ache his wife useless, and could only say that your sister was as fascinating as ever, and that he never enjoyed himself so much in his life as during his visit! He is so filled with intoxication that our simple fareand conversation will be ? to him, or was the life at ? to Omar after his retuen from England, whether you know he has her cameo by Capha Clask-Cleveland his returns and quintettte is complete. When will you give us? The hair Julian, pardon my familiarity, is requested much. He miss for him and accountanted social walks. I was last evening at a party at Mrs. H. Eliot, among her friends, where the should have been. Tell her no reform has taken place in Charlotte House. This requires attention. I was mortified last evening at the insipid compnay which I was obliged to offer to a beautiful lady where I was very anxious observed feast she will judge me by the ?, whish women he a certain way of shall I say it? asking beautiful hopes.
