About this object

In this small icon of the Iverskaia type, the Mother of God is shown three-quarter length, her right hand pointing to the Christ Child seated in the crook of her left arm and turned slightly towards his mother. His right hand is raised in blessing and he holds a furled scroll in his left hand. Only the faces are visible beneath the repousse gilded metal oklad. The Mother of God wears a very heavy maphorion with a punched floral pattern. Both heads are surrounded by a crimped sunburst venets. The monograms of the Mother of God and Christ are written in a florid cursive script in the upper corners. The ground of the icon is plain and an egg and dart border frames the whole.
