About this object

The full-length figures of four saints stand in contemplation of the Mother of God of the Sign, whose image appears in a semi-circle of clouds in the upper center. Directly beneath her St. Zosimus and St. Savatii turn to face each other each holding an unfurled charter proclaiming the foundation of the Solovetsky Monastery. Both saints are bareheaded with long full beards and wear the mantle and cowl of the Great Skhema (?) over a bright red undergown. Behind St. Zosimus stands St. Simeon the Divine (?), with a short full beard and wearing a brown robe, red mantle, and monk's klobuk and omophorium with red crosses. St. Aleksii Man of God stands behind St. Savatii, his hands crossed over his chest, barefoot and dressed in a red ankle-length tunic. The gowns of all four saints are highlighted with chrysography. They stand on a dark green ground against a gold "sky." Their haloes and inscriptions are painted in red, and a red filenka separates the kovcheg from the borders; the board is not carved. A silver repoussé oklad covers the ground of the icon, with beaded edge, rococo cartouches in each corner, and clusters of roses and berries in the middle of the side and bottom borders. A simple venets with engraved rays and beaded border adorns the Mother of God and each of the four saints. On the back of the icon there are two vertical and one carved transverse shponka in the center.
