About this object
The portrait is of the Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria (1830-1916) while still a young man. He is shown half length, facing forward with the head turned slightly to the right. He has high coloring, blue eyes and blond hair, with a thick moustache and mutton chop sideburns. He wears the white jacket with high collar of an officer with the Order of the Golden Fleece at the center of his neck and the ribbon and badge of the Russian Imperial Order of St. George Martyr pinned to the right of it. On his breast are the stars of four other orders. They are the star of the Order of Maria Theresa, the Star of the Order of Leopold, the Star of the Order of the Iron Crown, and the Star of the Order of St. Stephen. He wears a sash across his right shoulder to his opposite waist. The background is dark.
