About this object
Portrait of Marjorie Merriweather during the time of her marriage to Edward Close. She is sitting three quarters length in a french style chair. Her body is turned to the right, but her face is turned forward. Her right arm leans on the arm of the chair and she holds in her right hand a pair of knitting needles with a sock half finished on the needles. Her left arm is at her side and her left hand is in her lap, holding a ball of yarn on her lap. She wears a single strand of pearls, and a sleeveless dress in purple and blue tones. Her hair is upswept. In the left background is dark panelling. To the right is a winter scene, framed by the panelling but not seen through a window. It shows trees in a garden with a birdbath and a fence.
