About this object

A scene of an elderly woman and a small girl in an interior, with two gray and white long-haired kittens. The old woman is seated at the left and wears a frilled white cap, red and tan shawl, striped white apron and red skirt. Her feet are propped up on a cushion, and she has apples on her lap. She holds an alphabet book on her lap open to the letter D with her right hand. With her left hand, she holds the left hand of the child who turns to the right to look at the kittens. The girl is wearing a white dress with short sleeves and lace edging. She also wears boots that lace above her ankles. The kittens are playing at the lower right of the painting. One is one th floor, sitting on its hind feet and reaches for a cloth that drapes down from a pillow that the other kitten is sitting on. The second kitten looks down upon the first cat. The background shows dark paneling, possibly a door to the left, and part of a mantel to the right.
