About this object
This painting shows a scene with two figures in a landscape. At the right is a woman in 18th century costume who is seated and leaning against a rock while reading a book. Her dress has a white skirt, and a pink overskirt. Her hair is pulled back and she wears a bow or flower in the back of her hair. Her feet are tucked underneath her and she faces to the right where there is a small tree. In the center is a portly man wearing a big hat with a plume. He stands facing to the left holding a fishing rod in his right hand. His left arms is tucked behind his back. The rod extends off to the left. At the left is a stream and in the background a gray dock with the mast of a ship seen in the distance. A black dog is seated in the center foreground watching the woman. The background is plain grey.
