About this object

A five piece set of bed linens consisting of a sheet and 4 pillow cases. Three of the pillowcases are approximately the same size with the smallest one probably used as a bolster type pillow. All pieces are made of white linen and cotton with designs created in applique and white-work embroidery. The edging of all the pieces is of "Vieux Flandre" lace, which is a combination of bobbin and needle lace. The Davies crest is a prominent design element on all and is executed in needle lace with a needle lace mesh background. Below the crest are two appliqued flower baskets. The appliqued flowers have details of drawnwork in the center of the flowers and as the main body of the leaves of the flowers. There are continuous scrolls of applique that arch around the corners of the pillow cases and sheet. The lace edging of the smallest pillow case is two inches along the edge and in the corners four inches deep. This depth is created by needle lace a cartouche of three flowers at each corner. The lace edging design of the other pillow cases is the same, but the depth is three inches along the edges and in the corners 9 inches. Although the major part of the lace edging is made of bobbin lace flowers, there are needle lace accents throughout. The smallest case has five buttons that run along the opening in the back of the case while the larger cases have six.
