About this object

The woodwork is made from painted oak in an off white color with all the ornamental carvings, moldings, around panels including cornice, gilded in 22 carat gold leaf which has been burnished and antiqued. The carving is in high relief and is characterized by swags of flowers and leaves which are tied with bows over the fireplace and opposite and over the four narrow panels at either side of the doorway and either side of the large tapestry opposite. The lunettes over the two wall vitrines on either side of the fireplace are decorated with sprays of leaves and flowers containing a flaming torch and a quiver full of arrows crossed, the lunettes are topped by sprays of laurel leaves and berries and a bow. The plain panels are edged with a narrow gilt border molding of the egg and dart motif. The cornice is characterized by a row of gilt medallions. The tondo over the door to the Porcelain room is in carved wood painted to simulate terracotta. It contains two putti in an allegory of music, one playing the violin and one the cello, framed by heavy carved gilt swags of flowers and leaves topped by a bow.
