About this object

The top of the round table is made from tiger’s eye and lapis lazuli. The pattern is a star motif- first a small five pointed star, then a larger one, and a series of them until the largest of all is in a dark stone and from this there are many points. The border is made in lapis lazuli. The wooden frame is most elaborately carved and gilded. The skirt is carved in openwork. On each of the four sides is a central oval medallion in lapis lazuli while a rinceau of laurel leaves curl outward from each side and below an acanthus leaf is set with an amethyst quartz drop. Above each leg is a cluster of arrow tips. The legs are rectangular, tapering and with channeling. Draped garlands about the lower part of the legs fall over the rectangular feet. The stretcher consists of interlaced half circles with a serpent in the four interstices twined about an arrow and with the head coming out at the center. The central motif is a cone shaped cluster of leaves and flowers with a beehive of amethyst quartz surmounting it.
