About this object
Marjorie Merriweather Post purchased this mahogany, Louis XVI-style grand piano from Steinway & Sons in Manhattan on December 3, 1919. Immediately after its purchase, the piano was delivered to interior designer Baumgarten & Co. of New York, which may have executed the hand-painted medallions and carved decorations on the piano case.
The piano is painted with oval medallions in colors of winged putti and frieze panels with swags of flowers in colors and vine scrolls enclosing musical instrumentation. It has three elaborately carved standards.
