About this object

The tops are in a variegated red marble, shaped to fit the top of the commodes and with a carved profile edge wider at the bottom than at the top. The commodes both have the marquetry with borders in dark woods centering lighter woods. Each has two drawers with keyholes. Each drawer has elaborate ormolu handles and ormolu attachments with floral sprays, etc. The marquetry behind these handles and attachments is in a dark wood imitating a shadow effect. In the center of the fronts running across the two drawers is a large oval medallion with a frame with two borders of dark wood. In the center is a bouquet of flowers, roses, carnations, tulips, etc. tied with a ribbon and bowknot. To either side is a scattering of flowers with stems and leaves. The corners have three ormolu ornaments also with shadows in dark wood. The ends each have an oval medallion with a bouquet of flowers and ribbon similar to the bouquet on the front (all the bouquets vary). Around the lower part of the commode is an ormolu border with a leaf design. The simple legs taper downward and have ormolu sabots.
