About this object

The figural group is modelled as two putti seated on a rocaille-molded rockwork base, each wearing or holding an attribute of its respective continent. The continent of 'Africa' is represented by a Nubian boy looking upwards seated on a recumbent lion and wearing an elephant-head headdress and holding a deer's antler in his right hand and a yellow object in his left. He is nude except for a lavender loincloth decorated with purple and gold leaves. The continent of 'Asia' is represented by a nude putto dressed in greenish-yellow loincloth with scattered flowers held in place by a jeweled strap, which passes over his shoulders. He holds a white incense burner with openwork in his right hand. Behind his back, on a scroll, is a rust-red and white turban and a chain of gold beads and a half-visible quiver of arrows.
