About this object
Tureen and platter are inspired by an 18th century Sèvres porcelain design by Jean-Claude Duplessis père. The imitating Sèvres pink color tureen of round, polylobed bombé shape stands on white and silver leafy celery feet which two scroll foliate handles branch out. Two shaped panels in the tureen contain the self-portrait image of Cindy Sherman as Madame de Pompadour. It is transferred onto porcelain through a complex process requiring multiple photo-silkscreens. Each shaped panel is surrounded by a silver frame consisting of sprays of foliage which are also disseminated all over the pink background. The handle on the cover is in the shape of a silver artichoke with leaves. Madame de Pompadour’s maiden name was Poisson, French for “fish,” and the interior bottom of the tureen is embellished with a still-life image that combines various fishes with pearls necklaces in a reference to both Pompadour and her social status.
