About this object

The vases are urn-shaped, covered and painted en grisaille with subjects from the siege of Troy. The lower part is dark blue with gilt flutings. About the center is a wide band painted in grisaille with a scene from the siege of Troy separated by a stylized tree motif in gold. Scene with chariot shows Polydamus advising Hector to retire, and Juno and Minerva going to assist Greeks. Below the central band is a ribbed or melon pattern in dark blue outlined in gold resting on acanthus leaves in white and gold. The pedestal foot has same designs reversed. Above the grisaille section is a wreath in white and gold. The covers have the same melon or ribbed design in dark blue and gold and the acanthus in white and gold, the direction being reversed from that on the lower part of the vase. The knop is gold and melon shaped.
