About this object
A partly glazed porcelain figurine of the character Pliushkin from Nikolai Gogol's novel Dead Souls (Mertvye dushi). He is dressed in a gray cap and scarf, a tattered black coat tied at the waist with a length of rope that hangs unevenly over a gray nightshirt-like undergarment. He appears to be wearing white stockings and black slippers. He is poorly shaved, further matching his ill-groomed appearance. The circular base is a mottled green and the figure is steadied in the rear with a tree stump.
