About this object

Large, circular tureen with gilded female masks for handles. There is an Italian view on each side and a garland of roses in panels divided by bands of strapwork about the upper edge of the bowl and the lower edge of the cover. The handles for the cover is a gilded pine cone.

MARK blue with A and a crown [Underside] Type : INSCRIPTIONS Borgello et Ponte Felice / Civite Castellana. [Underside] LABEL "This [...] was made in the Imperial Porce[...] Factory during the reign of Emperor Paul [...] of Catherine the Great. After returning from a trip through Italy, Emperor Paul was so impressed with Italian scenery that he ordered a complete set of porcelain to be made with scenes of Italy on it. This was made late in the 18th century between 1795 and 1800. Porcelain made during the reign of Emperor Paul is considered very rare and quite individual. Formerly private property of the late Grand Duke of Sachsen-Weimar (d. April 23, 1923). Part of a group of 9 pieces which stood in the castles of [..]ttersburg and Belvedere near Weimar. Manufactured in Russia and brought out of Russia in 1810 at the request of Maria Pavlowna, a Russian Grand Duchess." Alexander I [added with pencil] [in bowl -- now in curatorial files]
