About this object

The plate is fairly deep. In the center is a scene entitled "The Liberation of Berlin, 1813" engraved in intaglio with a matte finish on a smooth ground colored with a yellow stain of silver sulphide. A vaguely classical figure wearing the ancient helmet of Russian warriors who represents Russian forces throughout the series places his arm around an allegorical figure of Berlin, who holds a shield on which the Prussian state emblem is partially visible. Kneeling at her feet is a second Russian soldier, also in classical garb, who removes the chains from her ankles. All are standing on an exergue. Below this is an inscription that translates as "The Liberation of Berlin, 1813." The edge is scalloped. Between each pair of scallops there is a rib on the back of the plate extending to the central medallion. Near the scallops are engraved lines going around the plate, the interstices being cross-hatched.
