About this object

The shelf of the mantel is made in white marble and has a step-out in the center and at either end. About the fireplace is a narrow band of white marble, next a wider one in variegated reddish marble. There is then another band of white marble. At either end is a white marble pilaster with channeling filed with variegated red marble. On the top of each pilaster is a rectangular white marble plaque carved with a two-handled vase. Between these two is a band of white marble with a projecting plaque in the center. This is carved in relief with a reclining female shown with books, scrolls and a globe. Between this plaque in the center and the ends, the white marble band has a reserved panel on the middle of each side with a two handled urn carved in relief while the rest is channeled and inlaid with variegated reddish marble.
