About this object

A woven basket weave design forms the basket. It is overlaid with a tromple l'oeil damask napkin overlapped and folded on itself. Looped around the handles of twisted silver is a thin string of silver with tassels at each end. This was a favorite conceit of the Russians for exhibition in the west and for export.
