About this object

The round metal box is partially lacquered with the edges and various other details gilded. The cover has a figure of an emperor riding over fallen prisoners and gesturing towards the sun, all these in mother of pearl and semi-precious stones set in lacquer. Around this runs a partially legible inscription in gold and silver letters. The border for the cover has a leaf scroll, gilded with a row of mother of pearl dots on the outside. The upper and lower edges at the sides are in gilt metal with wavy engraved lines. The sides have places for four cameos, only one remaining with a pseudo-classical head.
