About this object
On cover of the rectangular snuffbox is a map of the Province of Vologda indicating major cities and rivers; a table at the upper left indicates the location of neighboring provinces as indicated by letters on the map; a star marks the cardinal directions; and, at lower right, is a table indicating the distances between the main cities. All of these are rendered in niello against a stippled and gilded background. On the sides of the box are twelve applied shields decorated with the arms of the uyezds (lowest administrative division) within the province with titles identifying them. On the underside is a table with statistical information the social structure and occupations of the population of the Vologda Province, recording the number of merchants, peasants, nobles, etc. living there.
