About this object

On cover is map of Province of Vologda; a star giving the points of the compass; coat of arms of the province; table indicating distances between main cities; and three shaped cartouches with map key, list of neighbouring provinces and the title of the map, all in niello against a stippled and gilt background. Around the sides are shields of arms of uyezds (lowest administrative division)of the province and inscriptions identifying them, as well as description of a precise geografical location of the city of Vologda. On the bottom is a long inscription in niello giving many details about the land, factories, population and social structure of the province.
