On view in: Icon Room

About this object

Box is octagonal and the two pieces, lid and box, are each made from one piece of nephrite. Hinges are in red gold with a border of acanthus leaves in green gold. In center of lid is a miniature of the Tsarevich in the uniform of the Imperial Infantry Regiment, to which all male members of the Romanov family belonged. He is wearing star, ribbon and badge of the Order of St Andrew and the star of the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky. Miniature is framed in a narrow carved border of red gold and around it are decorative mountings of acanthus leaves and swags in red and green gold. The miniature of the Tsarevich is not original to the box and may have replaced a miniature of a woman in 18th century dress as described in 1935.
