About this object

Two urns which top the main entrance gates. Said to be carved porthcawl stone urns from Paulston-Ring wood, Hampshire England. Probably from a design by Lord Burlington. They are placed on a plain base which is joined to the socle or main part of the urn by large leaves which go halfway up the sides of the urns. There is a plain, undecorated section which is joined to the upper part of the urn by a band of Vitruvian scrollwork. This is topped by a repeating Greek key pattern. Finial has acanthus leaves decorating it topped by a fruit cluster.
