About this object

Pair of marble sphinxes depicting busts of coiffed ladies bedecked in brocaded saddlecloths decorated with ribbons and tassels. Winged putto holding garlands of flowers are mounted on their backs. One bust represents Marie Camargo (1726-1751), the brilliant ballerina of the Paris Opera; the other represents Marie Salle (1707-1756), the famous French dancer. The heads are turned slightly to one side and have half moons on top of their heads.
