Letters from Cambridge, Massachusetts dated February 24, 1842. Longfellow had been staying at Portland, New Hampshire with his sister and found on his return to Castle Crargie a letter from Sam Ward which he answers. Cambridge Feb 24 1842 Best of Sams, The night before I left Portland my sister said to me; "It is very strange! You have been here a fortnight and have not received a single letter from Mr. Ward! Nor was the mystery explained till last night, when at my arrival, at lonely Castle Craigie my eyes were gladdened by your two letters. I am exceedingly sorry that very disappointed, the young ladies and no doubt he was sorrier than they. I regret too, that I did not write you from Portland; since you seem to have been looking for a letter. But deuce take it! When I am away from this round table, I forgot where are such things as pen, ink and letter paper. Fellow has not yet returned. You fascinate him so entirely in New York that he cannot break away from you. Pray send him back to his disconsolate family who will pay ale changed and no questions asked. I long to hear his glowing account of your hospitalities as he turned his head inside out, and lots the golden medals for. I am in great haste this morning eager to see the faces of some friends, and have therefore only time to include the letter you request and which I assure you I am very afraid to give. I shall set about the Spanish student immediately. Graham offers me $150.00 to let him publish it in his magazine. What do you say to that? Please let me know what I am sure of getting out of Coleman this spring and when I shall get it. The Thirty Years War has been translated into English. Expect a long letter from me in a day or two, and remember me Ever affectionately yours Henry W. Longfellow.
