About this object

In this half-length, frontal image Christ's left hand rests on top of an orb cushioned by clouds while his right is raised in blessing. His oval face is modelled with a western understanding of chiaroscuro and is unmarked by wrinkles or expression. He has wide-set eyes, a soft pointed beard, and long curls that spill onto his shoulder. He wears a green hymation over a red chiton and the ground is brown with a green filenka. All but the face and hands are covered by a gilded silver oklad set in the upper half with two oval and two lozenge-shaped wedgewood blue enamel medallions that bear Christ's initials and the inscription "Lord Pantocrator." His hymation and the globe (to which a cross has been added) are rendered in repousse, while his chiton has a chased? floral motif that is repeated around the enamel medallions. A border of spaced floral motifs set between two beaded edges defines the polia.
