About this object

St. Nicholas is depicted bust length, a yellow omophorion with gold crosses and a red and gold brocade felon over his shoulders. His face is long and thin, with a very broad forehead creased with fine wrinkles above the brows and at the corners of the eyes. His eyes look slightly past and to the left of the viewer. His wavey hair and full beard are peppered with minute white hairs. The ground is covered with gold leaf over red bole and a thin red line delineates his halo and the boundary between the kovcheg and the ochre polia. His name is painted in black on the upper polia, the first letters obliterated. All but his head and part of the halo is covered with a worn silverplated oklad. A large split crown is attached over the top of a venets stamped with floral motifs and a beaded edge. A similar pattern delineates the polia.
