About this object

This miniature icon depicts the Nativity of the Mother of God. Her mother St. Anne is shown half lying on a bed beneath a red coverlet, being tended by a maidservant. A midwife seated at the foot of the bed has just bathed the newborn infant from a basin on the ground beside her and holds her, now swaddled, in her lap. Her father, St. Joachim, looks on from his seat at a table in the upper right. Three buildings occupy the background. The icon is ornamented throughout with chrysography and is framed by a red filenka.
