About this object

St. John stands in a barren mountain landscape, a river to his right, bearing a white standard with red cross to his left. His naked emaciated torso scantily covered by a dark hymation, his match-stick arms and legs, his long hair and matted beard framed by a golden halo, all proclaim him to be a hermit. A long staff with a double branched cross rests in his left hand, while his right hand and his eyes are lifted towards the upper left corner, where the disembodied right hand of God emerges from a mandorla, the fingers spread in a gesture of blessing. A double border of white semi-circles over a pattern of vertical strokes frames the lower edge of the kovcheg. The ground of the icon is a dark mottled green, while the borders are dark brown with a cinnebar red filenka. The kovcheg is carved.
