About this object

In the upper center of this small icon, framed by an archway with fluted columns is the half-length figure of the Mother of God (Smolensk type?) beneath two hovering angels who hold a crown above her head. She is flanked by St. John Chrysostum and St. John the Forerunner, while in the register below her stand St. Antony, St. Eufimius, St. Onufrii and St. Savva with a port scene behind them. In the half arches to either side of the Mother of God are St. Spiridon with St. George the Victorious below and St. Nicholas the Miracleworker with St. Dmitrii of Thesalonica beneath him. In three cartouches on the lower edge are the following inscriptions: (in center) "A representation of the holy miracleworking icon of the Blessed Mother of God, called Reliever of Grief and Sorrow, that is in the Russian monastery of St. Andrew First-called on Holy Mount Athos;" (on left) "Troparion. Relieve the Sickness of my much-lamenting soul. You who have soothed all the tears from the face of the earth" (on left); (on right) "Kondakion.<. . .> father consecrated most Holy Lady but accept our prayers." The icon is a chromolithograph on paper that has been glued to a board.
