About this object

In this unusual and as yet unidentified type the half-length figure of the Mother of God cradles the reclining Christ Child in her arms. Turning to her right and leaning slightly forward, She gazes sorrowfully at him as he lifts both arms towards her. The icon is rather crudely painted, the features of the faces and hands broadly outlined in black with white highlights. The Mother of God wears a deep red maphorion with white trefoil border and orange lining, the folds picked out in black lines with lighter red highlights. Christ's hymation is of the same red, worn over a dark chiton, and He lies on a thick bundle of white draperies. The kovcheg and haloes are covered in gold leaf, the haloes being outlined in white and yellow. The border is ochre with a dark brown and orange filenka. The silver gilt and enamel oklad that covers all but the faces, hands and feet has a raised border of embossed clover-leaf scrolls framing a flat kovcheg covered with the same foliate pattern. The draperies are entirely of silver filigree with beaded borders, the lining of the Mother of God's hymation rendered in ribbed silver. Paste diamond stars are mounted on her forehead and her left shoulder.
