About this object

The half-length figure of Christ Pantocrator faces the viewer, his right hand raised in blessing, his left holding an open gospel bearing the text "I give unto you a new testament to love one another." Christ wears a green hymation over a red chiton with gold border. All but the face and hands are covered by a silver gilt oklad richly ornamented with enamel. The central ground is picked out in alternating blue and red quatrefoils and daisies. The hymation is rendered in daisy-patterned enamel over a plain silver chiton with geometric borders at neck and wrist. His head is crowned by a detachable venets, with a cross of filigree enamel scrollwork bearing the letters O O N on a floral ground. The venets is edged with rows of beading, twisted rope, and openwork, culminating in a crown of white-bordered palmettes topped with kokoshniks. The border is marked by a rich filigree enamel of palmettes and crosses with four raised corner spandrels set with cabochon-like enamel drops. In the center of the bottom polia a plaque in silver and blue cloisonne enamel reads "Lord Pantocrator."
