About this object

The upper half of this tripartate icon contains the New Testament Trinity within a mandorla encircled by cherubim and seraphim and flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist, with the symbols of the four Evangelists occupying the four corners. Eight of the nine ranks of angels that make up the hierarchy of the Heavenly Host are grouped in circles edged with clouds, all singing praise to the Trinity. The lower left side of the icon depicts the Presentation of the Mother of God to the High Priest Zachariah in the temple. At the lower right are four scenes from the life of St. Elijah (Elijah being fed by ravens, his illness and ascent into heaven.) The kovcheg is painted on gold leaf in red, black, and ochre, the borders are painted ochre with a red and green filenka. The icon is painted on a single large board, with two very thin vertical shponki and two transverse shponki (the upper one has been removed.)
