About this object

The half-length figure of Christ Pantocrator directly faces the viewer, his head turned very slightly towards his right hand raised in blessing, while his left holds a scepter between thumb and index finger and rests on top of an orb from beneath which a phosphorescent blue light emanates. The icon is very brightly painted in an academic style. Christ wears a bright red hymation with gold patterned borders over a dark green chiton. His eyes are a piercing blue, edged with fine eyelashes, and his lips are full and red. The face and particularly the right hand are painted according to academic laws of chiaroscuro. The shadowy background is illuminated by a soft golden light that emanates in rays from Christ's head. A silver repousse oklad with a jagged sunburst venets covers all but Christ's hands and face. Thick swags of acanthus leaves and flowers surround the borders, with cartouches containing Christ's monogram in the upper corners. The board has two vertical shponki.
