CHRIST PANTOCRATOR

Creator(s): Dmitrii Orlov (Silversmith)

On view in: Icon Room

About this object

The half-length figure of Christ Pantocrator is painted in an Academic style popular in the mid 19th century. His blue eyes, red-rimmed and edged with feathery lashes, look directly at the viewer. His hair and curly beard are ginger colored and his finger nails are well defined. The planes of the face and the nose are defined with green shadows. His right hand is raised in blessing, while the left holds a cross between the fingers and rests on top of an orb cushioned by clouds. He wears a bright red chiton . . . The surface of the icon is scored with three horizontal scratches. All but the face and hands are covered by a silver gilt repousse oklad that contrasts the geometric strapwork venets and orb against a lush foliate pattern on the polia. Christ's hymation and most of the ground are plain repousse, except for the bib which is decorated with floral sprays on a stippled ground. The back of the icon is covered with brown velvet.
