About this object
Emperor Nicholas I was the son of Emperor Paul I and the grandson of Catherine the Great. His elder brother was Emperor Alexander I. Many portraits of Nicholas I were made after George Dawe’s works from the 1820s, including this portrait from the Middleton Albumand a painting in Hillwood’s collection signed “L. Sievers” (51.74).
The oval bust-length portrait depicts Grand Duke Nicholas Pavlovich (later Nicholas I) facing partly right, eyes looking forward, against a background of blue sky with grey clouds. He wears a black uniform with a red and gold collar, gold epaulettes, and the blue sash of the Order of St. Andrew with two badges.
