About this object

Scene depicts Louis XVI saying goodbye to his family and friends who surround him and are in an hysterical state. Four soldiers who have come to take him to the guillotine stand at the left in front of the bars of the jail. Louis XVI is sitting in the center with one foot up on a stool. He holds his son in the crook of his right arm and puts his left arm around a woman who is sitting on the stool and is draped over his left knee. Another woman is standing and has her head buried on Louis's right shoulder. To the right of Louis are three more women, all in various postures of distress. One prays, another lifts her arms to the sky, the thirs holds her head. There is a carpet on the floor and a drapery to the right.
