About this object

Oil sketch of a mustachioed army officer in a khaki tunic and navy blue pants with a red stripe, half twisting and seen from slightly below. His chin is slightly raised and he wears a blue officer's cap with a red band on his head. His proper right hand is in his pants pocket and he appears to be holding a lit cigarette in his upraised proper left hand. Although his figure ends at the knees, the painter has used the spaces around the officer to experiment with views of his polished, tall black boots seen from a variety of angles. The paint appears to be applied almost directly on the light wooden panel, although there are indications of a transparent glaze or lacquer apparent on the upper half of the panel.
