About this object

A young woman is seated in an interior wearing a pale blue satin dress. The dress is décolleté, with short puffed sleeves and a train. Her hair is upswept and held with a band in place. She looks out of the painting, and rests her chin on her left hand and arm, which rests on the arm of the pliant on which she sits. Her right foot rests on a satin pillow on the floor. She holds a white quill pen in her right hand, which is resting on a table in the classic style. It is painted white with a carved gilt wood decor. On it are several books. A red azalea plant is on a wrought iron stand behind the table, and there is a pale gray, three-panel screen behind the woman. The walls are paneled and the wooden floor has a pattern.
