A young officer seen three quarters length seated in a chair facing forward and looking to the right. He holds a book on his lap with a finger holding his place. He has high coloring, long sideburns and dark hair. His waistcoat and trousers are white and his red officer's jacket with gold epaulets is open. The sitter is unknown, suggested to be Captain Forbes.
