About this object

Painting shows a scene in an interior designed in Louis XVI style. There is a cardinal in red vestments seated at the right at a gaming table. He has thrown two dice. He leans on the table with his right arm and puts his left hand on his knee. Standing at his right is another cleric in black who appears to be taking a pinch of snuff. His right hand is raised as he holds a box in his left. He looks down with a supercilious expression at a man in military uniform who is seated on the edge of a gray side chair at the left of the painting. He is holding his hat in the crook of his left arm, and holding his right hand out in a supplicating attitude. There is gray wood paneling in the room with a large gilt mirror over a marble mantel. On the mantel is a pair of porcelain urns and an ormolu clock. There are two armchairs with striped tan satin upholstery, one at the left, the other at the right, with another gray side chair in front of the table There is a narrow multicolored rug on the parquet floor.
