About this object

Painting shows an allegorical scene in a landscape. There is a young man at right center wearing a short-sleeved white shirt and dark pants. He is turning inward, and reaching with his right hand to grasp a glass of red wine, which is held aloft by a nymph wearing, bunches of grapes in her hair. At the right is a second nymph wearing a wreath of white tobacco flowers, who is slipping the young man a wad of tobacco with her right hand. An arm from a figure behind this nymph holds aloft a rope, which forms a noose around the man's neck. At the left is a third nymph with long black hair, wearing a wreath of coffee beans, who holds up a coffee cup and saucer. In the background are clumps of trees at the right, shadowy factory buildings at the left. In a doorway in the distant left, there is a seated woman and child.
