About this object

A group portrait of Marjorie Merriweather Post as Mrs. Edward Close with her two daughters Adelaide and Eleanor Close. Post is seated at the right wearing a broad brimmed hat and a ruffled off-white dress decorated with pale pink ribbons (See 48.41). She holds a parasol in her left hand, and has a ball of yarn in her lap with an unfinished piece of knitting. The two girls are to her right. They wear large bows in their hair and matching off-white dresses with pink sashes. They hold garlands of flowers. The younger girl, Eleanor, is seated at the bottom of the painting with her feet crossed. She holds a dog in her arms, his forepaws are on her lap. The older girl, Adelaide, is standing with her mother's hand on her right shoulder. In a landscape setting with dark foliage. Marjorie Post sits on a stone ledge with pilasters. To the lower right is the head and shoulders of a hound dog.
