A portrait of Marjorie Merriweather Post seated 3/4 turned to the left, facing almost full front. Her hair is dark with a light streak. She is wearing pearl drop earrings, a two strand pink pearl necklace, a sleeveless low cut black satin dress, and a gray fur piece draped over her left upper arm. Her lower arm is resting on the back of the chair on which she is seated, which is carved and has a curving armrest. Her right arm rests on her knees. There is a piece of white satin draped over her left shoulder onto her lap. She wears a sapphire bracelet and ring on each hand. A miniature schnauzer is seated on the chair at her left side. In the background is a panel of red and gold brocade with a large tassel at the left.
