About this object

The painting depicts Napoleon on the way to Warsaw. A procession of soldiers winds down a snowy hill on the left, with a stand of trees on the right. At the front of the procession are two officers in uniforms with red coats, white pants, and tall hats. They are mounted on brown horses. On the far right, an officer riding a dappled gray horse points to the left. Behind the soldiers is a carriage drawn by four white horses in which Napoleon rides. His head can be seen inside the carriage. Other soldiers flank the carriage, and still others can be seen in the far distance, following the carriage. The season is winter with snow on the ground and a cloudy sky.
